Barings appoints Ian Mayhew as Head of Real Estate Equity Asset Management – Europe

Barings, one of the world’s largest diversified real estate investment managers, with more than €7.9 billion in real estate assets under management in Europe, has appointed Ian Mayhew to lead real estate asset management in Europe.

Having been with Barings for almost 18 years, most recently as head of UK real estate asset management, Ian has driven the successful execution of some of the investment manager’s most complex projects, including the championing of the integration of sustainability into Barings’ investment process. Recent major projects have included the design and delivery of Landmark in St Peter’s Square, Manchester, a best-in-class 180,000 sq ft of development that set four record headline rents during its lease-up; the completion of TIDE in London’s Bankside district, Barings’ first net zero carbon (embodied and operational) office scheme in the UK, in partnership with LBS Properties; and the development of approximately 750,000 sq ft of high specification logistics space in 2024 alone with a further 775,000 sq ft set to be delivered in 2025. Ian has been instrumental in introducing more comprehensive green lease provisions to Barings’ standard agreements and ensuring a greater emphasis on social value.

In his new role, Ian will lead a team of 20 asset management specialists across Europe. A key emphasis for the team under Ian’s leadership will be to prioritise delivering social and environmental sustainability along with a proactive and customer focused approach towards asset management.

Assuming the position with immediate effect, Ian is taking on the responsibilities of James Salmon, who retired earlier this month after 20 years with Barings.

Ian Mayhew, Managing Director and Head of Real Estate Equity Asset Management – Europe at Barings, said: “As a global platform with on-the-ground expertise in each of our preferred markets, Barings has an excellent track record of delivering against business plans and adding value on behalf of our investors. In this new role, my focus is developing our already strong asset management capabilities, ensuring consistency of process and standards to deliver best-in-class products across asset classes, particularly in our favoured sectors of logistics, offices, and residential.”

Nick Pink, Managing Director and Head of European Real Estate Equity at Barings, said: “While we believe we’ve entered a new real estate cycle in Europe, a key lesson from the past cycle was just how important a first-class asset management function is to creating and protecting value on behalf of capital partners. Ian has an unparalleled track record of delivering complex projects in the UK and contributing to Barings’ European business, and his appointment in this role will be crucial as we seek to maximise the opportunities in European real estate today and expand our assets under management.”
